The City of Columbus does collect bulk items for free. The fine print is what sends most people to a private hauler, and the City’s own rules say so directly.
Nothing is collected unless you schedule it online through 311 or by calling (614) 645-3111, and items can go out no more than 72 hours ahead of the pickup.
Mattresses, upholstered furniture and anything with fabric must be completely sealed in plastic before the crew will take it. Carpet has to be rolled small and glass taped.
In the City’s words, “bulk due to a move-out or a house clean-out is not eligible,” and residents are told to use a licensed waste hauler. Pickups are only for an occupied dwelling.
Refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, water coolers, furnaces, pianos, hot tubs, pool tables, tires and building materials are all on the City’s excluded list.
If you live in the City, have a single wrapped item and can wait for a slot, 311 is the right call. For a cleanout, a move-out, anything on that excluded list, or a pile that’s still in the basement, that’s exactly the private-hauler work the rules point residents toward. Suburbs such as Dublin, Westerville and Upper Arlington contract their own trash haulers with their own bulk rules — check with yours.
Ohio State enrolls 60,046 students on its Columbus campus, and University District leases turn over together at the end of July. For 2026 the City, OSU’s Office of Student Life and the University District Organization are running about 50 temporary drop-off sites from July 24 to August 11.
