How to get rid of a refrigerator in Columbus

The short answer

Visit minimum $75. A kitchen fridge and a basement chest freezer together is $164 + $146 = $310. Refrigerant recovery is required by federal rules, it is handled as part of the removal, and it is inside the price. No surcharge.

The second fridge, which is the actual Columbus story

Almost every refrigerator call in this metro is for the second one, not the one in the kitchen.

Central Ohio households keep a spare, and they keep it in one of two places. In the older neighborhoods, Clintonville, Beechwold, Merion Village, Old North, it is in the full basement, next to the workbench, and it is the one that holds drinks and whatever does not fit upstairs. In the suburbs, Hilliard, Gahanna, Westerville, Reynoldsburg, it is in the attached garage.

Both die predictably. The basement one dies of age, because it was already old when it got demoted. The garage one dies of Ohio weather, which is the more interesting failure.

Why garage refrigerators fail here

Standard refrigerators are designed to run in a heated house. Put one in an unheated Columbus garage and it spends four months a year in ambient temperatures the thermostat was never built for.

What happens is counter-intuitive. When the garage gets cold, the fridge compartment's thermostat reads cold and stops calling for cooling, which means the compressor stops running, which means the freezer section above it thaws. People find a warm freezer in January and assume the unit has failed. Sometimes it has, from years of short-cycling; sometimes it was never going to work out there in the first place.

Either way it is a real and repeating central Ohio item: the garage beer fridge that went warm in February and has been standing unplugged ever since, in the way of a car that is now parked in the snow.

Before the pickup

• Empty it completely, the day before. Door shelves, crisper drawers, the ice bin, everything.
• Defrost it, especially a chest freezer. Ice in the bottom is heavy and it turns into water partway up a basement stairwell, which is worse.
• Take the glass shelves out and set them aside. They shift, they break, and they are the thing that cuts somebody.
• Unplug it and free the cord so it cannot catch.
• Disconnect the water line if it has an icemaker. Shut the valve first, then disconnect, with a towel ready.
• Tape the doors shut once it is empty. Basic safety if it is going to stand in a garage or driveway, and it stops them swinging on the stairs.

None of that changes the price. It just makes the removal fast and safe.

Why you cannot take it to a landfill yourself

The sealed system. Refrigerant is a regulated substance and federal rules require it to be recovered by a certified technician before the appliance is scrapped or destroyed. A refrigerator with its charge intact does not go in as ordinary bulky waste.

This closes three doors that people try first:

• The tree lawn. Assume an appliance with refrigerant is not an ordinary curbside item and check the city's refuse collection page for your address.
• The free scrap collector. They will happily take clean steel off a driveway in Grove City. Most will leave a fridge.
• A rented truck and a run to the county landfill. It will not be accepted as-is.

The stairs, which is what you are really paying for

A full-size refrigerator is an awkward two-person carry on flat ground. On the stairs in a Columbus century home it is a job.

Those stairwells were built narrow and steep, frequently with a turn at the bottom and a header low enough that you duck. A side-by-side unit at $183 is wider than a lot of them. That is why the second fridge has been down there for eleven years: getting it out is genuinely hard, and everybody who looked at the stairs decided to deal with it later.

Carry-up is in the flat price. There is no stair charge in German Village, in Clintonville, or anywhere else in the metro. It is $164 out of a basement and $164 out of a Dublin garage.

Retailer haul-away, and what it misses

If you are buying a replacement, the store will often take the old one on delivery day. Use it, and check the terms first, because the structure is nearly always the same: delivery day only, one for one, disconnected already, emptied already, and from the same room the new unit goes into.

That last clause is the Columbus catch. The new fridge goes in the kitchen. The old one is in the basement or the garage. A delivery crew is frequently not carrying a decade-old unit up a century-home stairwell as part of a free swap, and they are not obliged to.

Chest and upright freezers

Chest freezer $146, upright $149. These deserve their own note because they are the heaviest thing in most Columbus basements and because of what is in them.

A chest freezer that lost power during a storm outage, which happens here every summer, and then got closed and forgotten, is a genuinely unpleasant object. Empty it and clean it out some days ahead, not on the morning of the pickup, and air the basement.

If the unit is coming out because of a power cut, it is worth asking whether the freezer failed or the circuit did. Replacing a working freezer is an expensive way to solve a breaker problem.
