Why mattresses are the hardest easy item

A mattress weighs less than a sofa and is far more annoying. It bends the wrong way, it has no handholds, and a queen is nine feet around the diagonal, which is longer than the landing turn in most Columbus century homes.

Memory foam is worse than spring. A queen foam mattress can go over eighty pounds and behaves like a dead animal on stairs: it folds, then it stops folding, then it wedges. If you have ever tried to get one down the open-riser basement stairs in a German Village half-double on your own, you know why people leave them leaning against the garage wall for two years.

Route 1: the tree lawn

Set-out rules for bulky items vary by address and change from time to time, so look up your street on the city's refuse collection page and note the window. If you live in one of the older neighborhoods with rear service alleys, Italian Village, Olde Towne East, parts of Merion Village, the alley pad is the set-out point, not the front.

Two Columbus-specific warnings. First, wrap it. A mattress left out through a run of Ohio freeze-thaw absorbs melt and doubles in weight, and a soaked mattress is a mattress nobody will move. Second, do not put one out early in August in the University District. The curbs on Chittenden, Norwich and East 14th are already loaded with the whole neighborhood's turnover, and yours will sit.

Route 2: recycling it

A mattress is genuinely recyclable in parts. Steel springs, foam, felt and the wood frame of a box spring all have separate outlets. A handful of states run statewide mattress recycling programs funded by a fee at purchase; Ohio is not one of them, so here it is down to private operators and whatever the county solid waste authority currently supports.

If you want to chase this, call ahead and ask three things: whether they take drop-offs from households, what they charge, and whether they will take a mattress that has been damp. The last one rules out most basement mattresses in this city.

Route 3: donating it

Be realistic. Most Columbus charities will not take a used mattress, and the ones that do have narrow conditions. No stains, no tears, no odor, no bed bug history, and often no mattress at all without the matching box spring.

If yours is genuinely near-new, a guest bed in a Bexley house that got slept on twice, call before you load it. If it came out of a rental near campus, skip this step. A mattress that has been in an unheated Franklinton garage is not a donation, it is a disposal.

Route 4: haul it yourself

You need a truck or a roof rack, rope, and someone to help. Legally you have to secure the load, and a mattress is the single most common thing you see loose on the shoulder of 270 because someone thought two bungees would hold it at highway speed. They do not. It catches air like a sail.

Then there is the drive. The county landfill sits on the south side out past Grove City, which from Westerville, New Albany or Powell means most of the outerbelt. Check the current gate hours, because Saturday closes earlier than people expect.

Route 5: flat-price pickup

Book online, see the price, pick a window. $103 for a queen, $143 for the set, carried down from wherever it is. No stair charge for the third floor of a Summit Street double, no long-carry fee for the alley behind a Victorian Village house, no surcharge for same-day.

This is the route that makes sense in three Columbus situations in particular: a basement guest bed in a century home where the stairwell has a turn, a campus-area apartment in August when your lease ends Friday, and any suburban house where the mattress has been standing in the garage since spring and the car has been sitting in the snow because of it.

Bed bugs, honestly

If you have or suspect bed bugs, say so in the booking notes. It is not a reason to be embarrassed and it does not change the price. What it changes is handling: the mattress gets bagged before it moves so it is not dragged down a shared stairwell in an apartment building and left in a hallway other tenants use.

Do not cut the mattress up to make it look like ordinary trash. It does not help, it is worse to carry, and in a multi-unit building near campus it spreads the problem to your neighbors.
