A moderate single-room situation is often one or two loads. A whole house with a full basement and an attached garage, which is the standard central Ohio package, commonly runs four loads or more. Nobody can tell you the exact count before the first door opens, and anyone who quotes you a flat all-in figure sight unseen is guessing.

Both become overflow the moment the house itself is full, and Ohio winters accelerate that because nothing goes back out between November and April.

A two-bedroom ranch in Northland is rarely a two-bedroom job. It is a two-bedroom, a basement and a garage.

How the work is actually sequenced

Doing it in one day is usually the wrong plan, and not for logistical reasons.

• Start with a clear path. Front door to kitchen, then to the bathroom, then to the stairs. Safety first, volume second.
• One area at a time, finished before the next one starts. Visible progress matters more than speed.
• Sort in place. Keep, donate, discard, and a fourth box for documents and photographs, which are what people most fear losing.

Health and safety, stated plainly

Columbus adds one specific risk: the basement. Older houses here get periodic water, from heavy summer storms, from a failed sump pump during a power cut, from a floor drain that backed up. Stored paper and fabric that has been through that is not just heavy, it is a mold question. If a basement smells earthy before you open the boxes, get it assessed.

Lead paint and asbestos are also live issues in pre-war Columbus stock. That is a contractor's call, not a hauler's.

When there is a deadline

Often there is. A code enforcement notice, a pending sale, a family member moving to care, a landlord's timeline. Deadlines make the work harder because they remove the pacing that makes it tolerable.

Two things help. Book multiple loads in advance so trucks are not the constraint. And separate the decisions from the labor: have the family make keep-or-go calls on categories, in writing, before the crew arrives, so nobody is negotiating in a hallway with a truck idling on the street.

Discretion
