The short answer
Nothing about the price moves with the calendar. A sofa is $126 on a Tuesday in February and on a Saturday in August. There is no weekend surcharge, no same-day surcharge and no peak-season pricing.
What moves is availability. The easiest slot in Columbus is a mid-week morning in the middle of the month. The hardest is the mid-August campus turnover. Everything else sits between those.
Weekday beats weekend, and mornings beat afternoons
Saturday is the most requested day everywhere, and Columbus is no exception. If you can take a weekday, you get a wider choice of windows and more same-day options.
Mornings run closer to schedule than afternoons for the obvious reason: a day's worth of variability has not accumulated yet. And in this metro the afternoon variable is usually the outerbelt. A crew crossing from Westerville to Grove City at four in the afternoon is on 270 with everyone else.
If you are booking around a tradesperson, a mover or a closing, put the haul in the morning and leave yourself the afternoon.
The month-end crunch
Leases cluster. The last three days of the month and the first two of the next are the busiest ordinary stretch of any month here, because that is when tenancies end and begin across the whole metro.
Mid-month is quiet by comparison, and the price is identical. If your job is a house clearout with no deadline attached, deliberately picking the 12th over the 31st gets you a better choice of window for exactly the same money.
Mid-August is the hardest two weeks of the year
Off-campus leases across the University District, Old North and Weinland Park roll over in the same handful of days. Tens of thousands of people change address simultaneously. Every truck in Franklin County is running, every tree lawn on Chittenden, Norwich and East 14th is stacked, and the streets around campus are effectively single-lane.
If you need a pickup in that window, book it in late July. If you do not, avoid it. And if you are a landlord in that footprint, reserve loads across the whole turnover week in advance rather than calling on the day.
Home game Saturdays
The other genuinely Columbus-specific scheduling fact. On autumn home football Saturdays everything inside 315 slows down from mid-morning, parking near campus becomes a competitive sport, and a truck that needs to sit on a residential street in the University District, Victorian Village or Grandview has nowhere to be.
For any address near campus between September and November, pick a weekday or a Sunday. For the rest of the metro it barely matters, but a Dublin or Pickerington job on a game Saturday morning is still an easier ask than a Summit Street one.
The seasonal pattern
January to March. The quiet stretch. Easiest availability of the year, often next-day. The jobs are indoor: basements, the TV that got replaced at Christmas, closets. One caution: anything in an unheated detached garage or on a back patio may be frozen to the ground in February, so an outdoor job is better left a few weeks.
March and April. Spring reset. Garages and basements, and this is the ideal time for both. The slab is dry, you can see what you have, and you get the bay back before the mower and the patio furniture come out.
May to July. Family move season across the suburbs, driven by school calendars and closings. Book a week ahead. Also hot tub and yard season, because the ground is workable.
August. The campus two weeks. See above.
September to November. Steady, with game-day Saturdays as the only wrinkle. October is the best month of the year to clear a garage, because the payoff is parking indoors all winter.
December. Quiet until the last week, then a wave of replaced televisions, furniture and appliances that runs into January.
Book around the thing you are actually doing
Most bad scheduling in Columbus is a sequencing error rather than a date error.
- Moving? Movers in the morning, haul in the afternoon or the next morning. Two trucks in one driveway is a wasted booking.
- Selling? Clear before the listing photos, not after the inspection. Buyers here walk basements and open garage doors.
- Replacing an appliance? Book the removal for the same day the plumber or the delivery crew finishes, so the old water heater never becomes a permanent basement feature.
- Renovating? Book the debris haul for the end of the demolition phase rather than daily, and make sure the hazardous items have gone on the county route first.
- Estate? Family, then sale or auction, then donation, then haul. Booking the haul first is the expensive order.
Same-day, and when it actually works
Same-day is often available across Franklin County and it costs no more. It works best for a defined job at an accessible address: a fridge in a Grove City garage, a sofa in a Hilliard living room, a mattress in a ground-floor unit.
What same-day cannot solve is paperwork. Managed buildings Downtown and in the Short North want a certificate of insurance on file and a reserved service elevator window, and that takes a day or two to arrange. If your address is a tower, book two or three days out.
The other thing worth planning ahead for is a very large job. A whole-house estate clearance in Upper Arlington is multiple loads and a crew for the day, and that is scheduled, not squeezed in.
